Who We Are
Doctors
- The Ashford Surgery and Bariatric Clinic is one of oldest and most experienced bariatric clinics in Australia. It has three surgeons and two GP's, who are a part of the clinic.
- Most of our patients will meet both of our GPs, who are among the most experienced bariatric GPs in Adelaide.
Dr Paul Anderson
The principal surgeon is Dr Paul Anderson, who has been doing this surgery for approximately 15 years and has performed almost 4000 bariatric procedures. Dr Anderson, undertook training in Belgium with one of the pioneers of this technique Dr Belachew ,and then brought the technique back and established it in South Australia.Dr Anderson has been part of the executive of bariatric surgery in Australasia, has published widely and conducted clinics on this technique.
Dr Benjamin Teague
Dr Teague completed his Fellowship in General Surgery in Adelaide with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2008. From 2008 to 2010 he worked as the International Fellow at the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery, McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. In Canada he completed two years of additional specialty training in advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures including obesity surgery, fundoplication, splenectomy, colectomy, ventral and inguinal hernia repair.
In 2010 Dr Teague returned to Adelaide, joining the Ashford Surgical and Bariatric Clinic to offer private weight loss surgery. Dr Teague has training in laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and is able to offer patients an informed choice in surgical weight loss procedures including the laparoscopic band as well as the sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass procedures. Dr Teague also works in public practice at Modbury Public Hospital as a Visiting Specialist in General Surgery with an interest in advanced laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery.
- The two GP's are Dr Steve Sabine and Dr Mark Yaeger. Both of these doctors have quite extensive experience now with bariatric patients and subscribe to the philosophy that patients with a weight related problem usually have numerous reasons for their weight gain, which shouldn't be prejudged to be just lack of discipline
- We all believe the reasons for weight gain are complex and are often an interplay of genes and environment. Each patient will be considered individually and any correctable problems identified and dealt with prior to surgery. While patients primarily come to us for a surgical solution to their weight problem,we believe that the HOLISTIC approach is important
Clinic Administration
Administrative and research staff staff are Deidre Tappscott and Adeline Summers. Deidre is the Practice Manager and Adeline is frequently at the front desk and assists Deidre. Terry Wainwright is a recent addition as is Di Steel both of whom have been gradually incorporated into the whole process of patient management.
Dietitians
Additionally we have dietitians who offer ongoing dietary counselling both pre-operative and post operative as well as in hospital. They are an essential part of our clinic and construct consultations at various levels either as an individual consultation or group consultation
